One of the more picturesque settings for an arena in the OHL is that of the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound. It sits on the shores of Georgian Bay and is slightly tucked away from the rest of town in a residential neighborhood. The drive to Owen Sound is one of the nicer ones in the OHL too, but it can be tricky in the winter months, and the area usually gets slammed with snow squalls all winter. It’s not uncommon for multiple games per season to get snowed out and rescheduled.
The rink is one of the smallest in the OHL and feels like a true community barn. The roof hangs so low that I never thought a video scoreboard would be possible, but they managed to fit one in. With the low ceiling and metal surfaces everywhere, it can make for a very loud crowd as the sound (no pun intended) has no place to escape. The bench side of the ice has some suites hanging on the wall, which used to be the exterior wall for the rink before renovations in 2000 installed said suites. Behind them sits a much wider concourse than the rest of the building has.
During that same renovation in 2000 a new front facade was added to the building to give off a bigger crowd level lobby with a new team store. Each end of this lobby has a set of stairs to lead you up to the concourse that runs around the top of the small seating bowl. A more recent renovation in the late 2010s saw the addition of a few more suites behind one of the nets. Most of the views in OS are fantastic, as even if you’re in the last row you’re still right on top of the action. There is an ice/ground level concourse, however its mostly blocked off to fans for the team facilities.
Owen Sound was one of my earliest OHL road trips back in early 2008. It may not have the frills and luxury of some of the new clones, but it’s an arena I quickly fell in love with and it’s an experience you don’t get too often across the OHL anymore. Just make sure you check the weather forecast if you plan on going any time after November.
Also, they have amazing french fries there, try them.
