The Xfinity Mobile Arena is a part of a large stadium complex, the likes of which is unique to Philadelphia on the city’s south side. It’s just a stone’s throw from the New Jersey state line where the team’s actual practice facility is and where all the players reside. The rink has the NFL stadium and MLB stadium sitting in the same complex, surrounded by acres of parking lots that would make Itchy & Scratchy Land jealous. There is also what is essentially a bar mall sitting in the middle called xfinity live which is like Real Sports in downtown Toronto, except it’s several different bars and restaurants under one roof, which is a decent spot for pre and post-game.
Unfortunately, Xfinity Arena in Philly is one of the more blander NHL rinks I’ve come across in my travels. To be fair many NHL rinks these days are similar to each other, so what makes one stand out from the other good or bad are little details. What stands out in Philly are the lack of the little details. The concourse is one of the blander in the NHL with lots of grey and white on the walls. There are some Flyers features like a trophy case for the team awards and a cool hat trick history display. But for a team with about as much history as a non-original six team can have, I was disappointed not to see more of it on display. To be fair you can’t totally douse the concourse in black and orange, as the Flyers share the arena with the NBA’s 76ers who have a totally different colour scheme with red, white and blue.
The arena itself is a pretty standard one built in the mid 90s during the beginning of the arena boom. For 1996 it would be considered luxurious, but in 2025 it just seems average. That said it’s been kept up well. It doesn’t feel like a 30 year old building at all. For years the seats were a boring maroon, but they’ve recently been replaced with black seats which work awesome for the Flyers’ colour scheme. The lower bowl views seem fine, could stand to be steeper but that’s just how most NHL rinks are. There are no obstructed upper bowl views which is always good, as many arenas in the league have blocked views thanks to hanging press boxes. The A/V production I would give a solid B+. It didn’t blow me away, but I’ve seen worse in the NHL. For what the rink lacks in physical history they do show it off in hype packages.
The atmosphere in Philadelphia was mostly a dud, but I must point out I was seeing a Saturday afternoon game at the end of a terrible season for the team which came on the back of several terrible seasons before it. I know the atmosphere in Philadelphia can and is much better when the locals have a good team to cheer for. However, I can only go off of my personal experience, and that experience was mostly a dud in the atmosphere department, which is a shame. There is nothing wrong with the Xfinity Mobile Arena, and the fact they’re already talking about replacing it by 2031 seems mad to me. That said there’s nothing great about the building either, and at the end of the day I’ve ranked it on the lower end of my NHL experiences. Perhaps one day that will change.
