The Gordon Alcott Arena is the original rink of what is now the large Mold Masters Sportsplex in Georgetown, Ontario. It is the only arena of all the ones I’ve seen games in that I cannot account for. I know I’ve been to a handful of Jr. A Georgetown Raiders games here in the early-mid 2000’s, but I do not remember the dates, opponents, scores etc. – I just know I’ve been to games here. I grew up in Brampton, Ontario, but during middle school my best friend moved to Georgetown, so I would frequently go out there for the weekend. During some of those visits we would go to Georgetown Raiders games on Saturday nights. It was only $5 to get in at the time, and it was live hockey in a time when going to live hockey was super rare for me, so it was always a good time. I have not been to a Raiders game in about twenty years now, and I have no plans to go back, but if I am going to have reviews of all the arenas I have seen games in on this website, I figured I might as well make a page for this one.

The massive Mold Masters Sportsplex has seen expansions over the years. The Gordon Alcott Arena was first to go up in 1975, and is the arena in the foreground in the above picture. When I went to Raiders games twenty years ago there were two ice pads, but in the 2010s a large expansion added two more ice pads on the north side of the complex. The complex sits along what would be considered the main drag of Guelph St through the heart of town, and sits just across the street from the city’s mall.

Upon entering the original main entrance of the complex, you turn left and walk past a large trophy case displaying a lot of the minor hockey history of the area before it opens up into a smaller lobby which housed the only concession stand used during Raiders games. This would also be the area you would pay your admission fee for the game. To the right you head up a flight of stairs that leads to the main grandstand on the penalty box side of the arena. This stand is elevated with the first row above the glass, and it sits on top of all the dressing rooms. There is also standing room at the top of this grandstand which has six rows of wooden benches on top of the concrete stairs. At the far end there is another staircase that leads back down to ice level. The near end of the rink has a large steep grandstand that goes up ten rows behind the net. This stand is totally separate from the one along the penalty box side of the rink. The far end of the rink is used for some storage and standing room, and has the rink’s only scoreboard up on the wall along with some banners, while the bench side is just for the team benches. The wall behind the benches houses most of the banners for the Raiders and all the minor hockey success the area has seen over the decades.

At the end of the day the Gordon Alcott Arena is a pretty standard community rink, much like the hundreds that dot communities across the country. This one just happens to play host to a Junior A team that I saw play live a handful of times twenty years ago. While I don’t remember the opponents or the scores of any of the games I attended here, I do remember the atmosphere being pretty good, with some rowdy fans in the crowd. The building would usually be mostly full. Whether or not it is still like that now I have no clue.

Games Attended

As mentioned above, this is the only arena on this site that I cannot account for the exact dates, opponents or scores of the games I attended here. All I can say for sure is I went to a handful of games here between 2003-2005.
